Many are calling it the “Quarantine 15,” the side effect of stress-baking, closed gyms, and rarely leaving the house. However, most dietitians advise that a little weight gain during this global crisis is nothing to fear.
We should focus on nutrition, not weight.
It’s okay to eat a little more and exercise less during quarantine! Strict dieting and intense workouts can actually stress your body, suppressing your immune system, which is the last thing you want. Unless you have weight-related health issues, this isn’t the time to be worried about restricting. Remember that food plays a vital role in supporting immunity and it’s important to listen to your body. If the worst thing that happens to you from this is gaining a few pounds, then consider yourself lucky.
Just do your best to be healthy.
Try to make nutritious food choices, whether you’re concerned with your weight or not. A healthy diet has been shown to boost immunity and reduce our risk for depression and anxiety, which is especially important when you’re cooped up at home. Light exercise also helps to boost immunity and manage stress even if it’s just walking outside or yoga at home. Keep in mind this is all temporary. Once this pandemic ends and you get back to your usual routine, your body will likely also return to whatever a typically weight is for you. Ask your doctor if you have questions about your best course of action during COVID-19.
