Visiting Elderly Relatives Over the Holidays

January 15, 2020 | Managing Prescriptions

Has going home for the holidays made it clear your loved ones just aren’t the same? Here’s how to help mom, dad, grandpa or grandma cope with aging.

Watch for a few red flags.

If you’ve noticed things like unexplained weight loss, mood fluctuations, changes in balance or mobility, your concerns are valid. These can be signs of age decline and should be monitored carefully.

Be mindful of changes in their home environment. If they’ve always been tidy but their home is now out of hand, there could be an underlying reason. Scorched cookware, expired food, or piles of unopened mail are other signs your loved one may need extra assistance.

Encourage them to see their doctor when something seems off. If they’re struggling to manage their health on their own, it may be time to look into other options.

Are doses being missed?

As we age, we tend to rely on more medications to stay in good health. However, older individuals often forget to take their prescriptions on time. Missing a dose or two may not seem like a big deal but can actually cause serious complications. Medications are most effective when taken consistently. Conditions requiring insulin, pain medications, antidepressants or blood pressure pills can be extremely problematic when doses are missed so it’s critical to follow a strict schedule. Even over-the-counter drugs, such as aspirin, need to be taken as advised by their doctor.

Prescription peace of mind.

If you’re worried about your loved one juggling lots of prescriptions, there are a number of ways to help. We offer the following services specific to elder care to get their health back on track:

  • Presorted Medication Packs. We simplify their daily routine by sorting their prescriptions into daily, time-specific packets so there’s no more wondering what to take when.
  • Synchronized Refills. We’ll refill all of their long term prescriptions on the same day each month to save them from multiple trips to the pharmacy. This ensures they always have what they need. It’s one less thing they…and you have to worry about.
  • Free Medication Management Reviews. We review all their medications (prescription and over-the-counter) to check that everything works as it should. While they’re here, we can also look for cheaper generic options to save money.
  • Mail Out. We can save them a trip to the pharmacy by mailing prescriptions to them each month. We also provide free delivery within Aberdeen.

It isn’t easy seeing our loved one change from the person we’ve known our entire lives. With your Aberdeen Pharmacies, there’s less room for medication errors and more time being themselves again.
